Thumbs on Fire! The TEXT MESSAGE Craze!
What’s this text craze all about? People are sending “Text Messages” everywhere. They text during school, at company meetings, Starbucks, waiting in line at the grocery store, in church and in their cars. Their two thumbs are faster than my ten typing fingers.
Young adults rely on their cell phones to communicate. Most of them don’t even know what a “land line” is. In fact, 82% of adults 18-24 are avid text message users. Of the 25-49 age group, 72% use text messages.
But, when you look at the overall users of text messaging, 53% of those who send and receive text messages are 35-years-old and up.
Text messaging is not just for the young any more. In addition, text messaging is more “instant” and reliable than email. With all the spam alerts, filters, anti virus software and hype about killer computer viruses a lot of well intentioned emails are tossed into the spam and junk files. Here’s some more stats I dug up on text messaging:
- 72.2% of wireless users have paid for SMS packages. This equates to 203 million Americans.
- 57% of wireless users 13+ are considered regular text message users.
- There has been a 107% increase in text message use in the USA in the past year.
- 2.5 billion text messages are sent each day in the USA.
- More text messages are sent per phone than phone calls. The average text messages used per month is 357 compared to 204 cell phone calls.
- 15 million Americans used video on their cell phones in quarter two, 2008.
- 138 million Americans have sent a text message in the past three months.
Bob Benz of Mobile Industry Review provided these stats. Thanks Bob!
