When You Can’t Get Heard by the Herd, Focus on Your Niche
I’ve had many opportunities over the years to speak in front of groups of varying sizes. Yeah, that’s me in the picture. I recall one instance when I was hosting a meeting in Seattle. A group of about three-hundred had just returned from a break and the room was buzzing with conversations and idle chatter.
Hundreds of simultaneous conversations overpowered the PA System as I yelled to get their attention. The funny thing is, the crowd kept telling me to turn up volume but the PA system was no match for hundreds of requests that kept insisting that they couldn’t hear anything. Guess what, if you have to yell they’re not listening anyway!
Here’s my point relating to blogging. We have to stop and listen if we want to hear what’s being said. On the Internet, millions of people are talking at the same time and not too many are listening. When there’s a lot of noise, you can’t get heard by the herd but the entire herd may not be interested in hearing what you have to say.
Here’s a great way to get heard on your web blog. Take your conversation outside of the crowded room. Don’t just blah, blog, blah, blog, blah, blog and try to blog louder than the millions of other bloggers in hopes of getting heard. Find your niche and give them loads of value. Know what you are talking about, and build trust. What is niche marketing? It’s simple, identify a specific group that’s interested in what you have to say.
There are a lot of bloggers named Pete and Repeat. Original content from a knowledgeable, passionate, enthusiastic messenger establishes credibility and authority and gets attention. As I mentioned, it’s a good idea to take your conversations outside the crowded rooms. Find people that are interested in hearing what you have to say.
